Speed Painting “Freddie Mercury” Painting Process

Share

Freddie Mercury
(born Farrokh Bulsara)
1946 – 1991 was
one of the greatest
performers and singers
of all time and one of
the most inspiring and
courageous individuals
in rock and roll history.

I was always pretty
sure I’d do a Freddie
Mercury painting at
some point since
Freddie was one of
my childhood heroes
and Queen were
actually my FIRST most favorite band (later replaced by Nirvana who still hold the
title of being my most favorite band ever to this day).

I used to listen to Queen a lot when I was a little kid and I used to wait for their
videos to show up on MTV all the time… back then in the late 80’s-beginning of the
90’s MTV was such a cool channel and they always featured a mix of the newest
videos and some older ones and they used to play a whole lot of Queen videos back
then… "radio ga ga", "a kind of magic", "i want it all", "i want to break free",
"the show must go on", "innuendo", "I’m going slightly mad" were all featured
a whole lot and later after Freddie died of AIDS "bohemian rhapsody" was featured
non-stop and dominated the charts being the first song ever I think to re-emerge at
#1 on all the charts years after it’s original release.

Queen will always have a special place in my heart and Freddie Mercury would
always be remembered as a musical icon and as one of the most beautiful and
most impressive male voices to ever grace popular music.
Freddie would also be remembered for his strong spirit his unmatched charismatic
stage persona and for his admirable courage and passion for music and life
continuing to record music, perform, make music videos, smile and show
amazing showmanship in his videos even during the last years of his life when he
was dying from AIDS.

The music in this video is by Kevin MacLeod and you could visit his website at

Initial Sketch and rough coloring

Freddie Mercury painting parts 1-2 by Williams-Shamir
I have started this by drawing with a
pretty detailed sketch, which is
something I haven’t done in quite some
time.
I should say that doing such a detailed
sketch isn’t something that’s really
needed but I just like drawing with my
tablet from time to time…
My hand started hurting really bad during
this stage because I was painting
just too much during the days when I
was doing this one (I was working on a project at that time for a big production
and did this painting basically at the ends of these days just to relax).

After getting the initial sketch looking pretty much ok I just colored the whole thing
very very roughly and very loosely just to set the ground for detailing.

Detailing, detaling and some more detaling

After roughly coloring the initial sketch it was time for detailing and focusing more
on the smaller features.
I have used photoshop’s set of natural brushes for giving the skin it’s detailed
texture. These brushes are just great for creating texture and painting things like
trees because they just have a traditional feel to them and can be used in some
traditional ways.

Finishing…

Freddie Mercury painting parts 11-12 by Williams ShamirAfter the face was finished and looked
good I just needed to paint the leather
Jacket which was pretty easy and then
sign this one and call it done.

I enjoyed making this one very much
and I think it turned out to be a really nice tribute to Freddie Mercury

I hope you enjoyed it too :) .

THE END.
